A1M | County Durham | Carriageway Closure | Expect Delays
The A1M is currently closed in both directions from J59 to J58.. This closure is due to a road traffic collision and Highways England has resources deployed working hard to restore normal conditions as soon as possible.
For traffic approaching the closure locally, you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and may potentially have to re-route your journey.
If travelling towards this area from much farther afield, you may wish to change your strategic route, allow extra travel time and follow guidance from our on-road variable message signs and media.
Diversion route is signed by the solid circle diversion symbol:
Exit the A1M at J59 onto the A167. Travel north west on the A167 to the end of the dual carriageway section. Bear left onto the B6444 (St Andrews Way) crossing a roundabout and at the next roundabout take the first exit onto Heighington Lane heading west towards Heighington, going straight across 2 roundabouts turning left at the third roundabout onto the A6072 south. Continue along this road (which will merge to become the A68) towards the A1M J58 where traffic can resume southbound journeys.
Traffic heading northbound are advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol and follow the above instructions in reverse i.e. A68, A6072 toward Heighington, B6444, A617 to re-join the A1M at J59.
